Here are ten questions I would ask when interviewing an artist about their work, practice, and process of creating the finished piece:
Can you describe your artistic practice and the themes or concepts that inspire your work?
How do you typically begin a new piece or series of work? What is your creative process like?
Could you share any insights into your choice of materials, techniques, and mediums? How do these choices inform the meaning and impact of your work?
Could you walk us through how you develop an idea from concept to completion? What steps do you take along the way?
What role does experimentation play in your artistic process? How do you approach risk-taking and pushing the boundaries of your practice?
How do you know when a piece of work is resolved or completed? What criteria do you use to evaluate your own work?
Can you discuss any challenges or obstacles you encounter during the creative process, and how you overcome them?
Do you have any rituals or routines that help you get into a creative mindset or overcome creative blocks?
How do you balance intuition and intentionality in your work? Do you plan your compositions meticulously or allow for spontaneity and improvisation?
How do you see your work evolving in the future? Are there any new ideas or directions you're excited to explore in your practice?
