Experimenting with expressive lines and marks
My first painting many years ago was a result of big soul pain. I remember this moment when I took colors and was painting something abstract. This process was like relief.
Today I’m experimenting with feelings and emotions on sheets of paper with different kind of painting and drawing materials.
I’m going to explore ‘Anger’, ‘irritation’, ‘calmness’ and ‘joy’.
My first emotion is – ANGER
This was an experience. I was shaking out of energy after I have done 4 paintings on one sheet. Process of work involved my inner feelings – I let it out but there were constraints.
Before starting the process and get completely angry I took my time for analyze of the materials. At this stage I was quiet aware that aquarelle for example would give me transparent lines and soft silhouettes. This for sure, in my world never would fit to the feeling of anger. With this approach I went through all materials which I prepared for this task and approximately defined which emotion can be represented best by which substance. As a result for Anger I choose heavy materials with bright colour.
Size of paper was too small for this feeling because on the last image I was so angry that I just colored my fist and as my grandmother did when she was very angry, I smashed it several times on the last panel.
In the first image I used black oil due to my wish add volume and structure. I use big brush with hard bristles. I moved it with passion and deep anger without conscious control. But as it was my first painting in the A1 sheets, I tried thinking about imagery borders.
Second painting I wanted to fell better the paint and glossy acrylic paint. For avoiding the conductor in between me and sheet – I painted with fingers.
During my third painting I used charcoal. It was a small, rather soft thin bar of charcoal. At this stage I already had two bottom panels filed so I kept in mind that overall all of them should have balance and don’t stand out. Positioning this image on top I thought that it can’t be at the bottom of all 4 panels otherwise heavier material on top would press it down - would be disbalance.
