« Part four has been hugely productive for you. There's been a real shift from the representational and you are investing in the process and embracing a broader formal exploration of surface, form, volume, colour. … you are moving towards a very successful piece with Work 4 (Project 8).” (OCA Tutor)
In my practice, I have already worked with abstract forms, and at that moment, they were incomplete. So I started experimenting with recognizable images. But my fascination with new media and representational forms led me to something that feels like kitsch and artwork make a judgment, rather than raising a question. I am lost.
This part of the course helped me to get a feel for the material and its interaction in-between and with me. My tutor recommended that I focus on the process, not the result. Before, having an idea, I tried to do something that turned out to be primitive. But when I started just doing and not thinking, intuitively, the result was professional and profound. In consultation with my psychologist, he also pointed out that I control a lot with my brain and do not listen to my inner self.
These two examples make me think that I am the same material as clay or wood, which interacts with other things/people around me and the more I “think with my belly” the batter communication is.
I understand that I can evaluate the art objects of other artists through the sense of balance and harmony through my unconscious and separately see the level of technical work. But I don’t understand how to come to this balance in my works.
« Continue to explore how you might use colour to unify, emphasize, delineate etc.” (OCA Tutor)
Colour and texture turned out to be one of the most important components of my work. I don't like drawing, pencil, watercolour or soft materials. I don't feel them. They have no texture, volume or rich colour. When a tutor asks me to make sketches and drawings, I feel uncomfortable, but I am happy to depict something with oil or any other material where I can feel its volume, its meaning.
« Through your use of colour and projection, you're beginning to work in a really interesting way with the relationship between surface, colour and form. …This awareness of the conversation between how work is made, recorded and received is really productive. » (OCA Tutor)
Projection can take on a figurative role, and the bodily and unconscious can be abstract. I will develop this topic further in the next part 5.
