Part 5.1 Developing sculpture and imagination. Closure of Gestalts

Updated: Jan 15, 2021

Unfinished ideas bothered and interested me, so I decided to start work on the final part with the implementation of ideas that I had planned to try for a long time. Rather it is experimentation and material research. First, I got the right plaster. Second, I wanted to experiment with a hot-glue gun and see how the materials interact.

I started with a different kind of fabric. First, I put the pieces of material in a plaster of Paris. The material absorbed the water and dried in the position I left it in. I noticed that working with a quick-drying medium puts me under stress. This is an unpleasant feeling, and it seemed to me that it should not be at work.

Sometimes I miscalculated the proportions of the mortar and had to quickly use the remaining plaster with something else. In one of these cases, a soft paper was at hand. In combination with gypsum, it softened but did not fall apart, and its shape remained plastic and dynamic. If to add a coloured pigment, you get a spectacular colour spot, like in the painting.

Next, instead of clay in the exercises with the relief, I pulled the material over the sides of a wooden box and filled it with plaster. The result exceeded my expectations. It turned out to be a very dynamic woman's pose, and the plaster cast accurately conveyed the texture of the fabric.

I continued to fill the volume with plaster and at the same time displace it with some other material that could then be removed.

I put the clay balls together with the plaster of Paris into a bag and turned it over so that they were on top.

The result reminded me of the eggs or follicles of a woman. Then they were removed, and there was a void in the total volume, as with IVF. A woman is stimulated with hormones to grow a large number of follicles, and then they are taken away for artificial fertilization. At this moment of operation, the ovary looks like this sac.

Then, I tried pouring plaster of Paris into a fabric bag and filling it with construction foam. As a result, the foam rose to the top and clearly separated from the plaster, although I introduced the material into the middle of the mass. The two materials tightly bonded together, so a strange feeling to the touch, one is hard and heavy, and the other is light and hollow.

I tried to combine the plastic elements with the gypsum. It turned out that not all plastic is compatible with this material. It melted, but the gypsum had time to harden in its original form. It can be interpreted, as peculiar imprinting of the time flow. The material was volumetric, and when interacting with a destructive element, it became small and shrivelled.

Then I tried to create volume from plastic mesh and bags. The effect is one - the piece is ripped out of the total volume.

Then I just combined the elements. I played with light and ultraviolet light. Tried what I can do with a hot glue gun. I painted a glass, gypsum, plastic and metal.
