Contextual Study Plan

Various points of my plan were completed or partially fulfilled. I will certainly continue to improve my findings and conclusions, as well as monitor the context of my research, while I need to focus on completing some big projects and important ideas.

Research Question:

In what ways can I challenge established norms and perceptions through my artworks to disrupt complacency and inspire transformative action on a visceral level?

Objectives: This is the basis of my focus that I just need to verify and refine.

1.     Challenge Established Norms and Perceptions: Investigate how art can question societal norms and provoke critical reflection.

2.     Disrupt Complacency: Explore the role of art in awakening viewers from passive acceptance. I feel there is still potential here to deepen my understanding of how to specifically provoke change.

3.     Inspire Transformative Action: Assess how visceral and emotional responses to art can lead to personal and societal change.

Methodologies:

1.     Practice-Based Research:

o   Creation of Artworks: Develop new works using unconventional materials, focusing on themes of trauma, memory, cultural identity, and synaesthesia.

o   Experimentation: Experiment with different textures, colours, and compositions to evoke multisensory experiences.

From the previous plans:

Ø Continue Outdoor work - temporary installation on the wall. Testing the anti-sculpture and vitality of matter.

Ø Done Working with metallics - testing a counter method of working - painting cars on wooden sticks.

Ø Done, add analysis Sculpture, how it relates to my wall works and large installations.

Ø Done Test on small works - expressionism is a quick method of work.

Ø Dual Exhibitions: Host two concurrent exhibitions — one in a physical space, one online — featuring the same artworks. In the physical exhibition, display the raw materials and creation process, while the online version shows the polished, finished pieces, prompting viewers to consider the differences between experiencing art digitally versus physically.

Ø Drawings - Continue experimenting with new upcycled paper. How does this relate to my research?

2.     Visual Analysis:

o   Formal Analysis: Examine the visual elements of my artworks, such as composition, colour, form, and texture.

Ø Sensory Engagement: Explore the sensory experiences provided by different materials and how they affect the viewer's emotional and cognitive responses.

o   Contextual Analysis: Situate my works within the broader context of contemporary art and post-conflict visual culture.

Potential deepening of my research

Ø Historical Context Art History: Study the evolution of art movements that relate to my practice, such as Abstract Expressionism, Minimalism, or Post-Modernism. Understand how past artists have challenged norms and used unconventional materials.

3.     Audience Engagement Studies:

o   Feedback Collection: Gather responses from exhibitions, workshops, and online platforms to understand viewers’ emotional and cognitive reactions.

o   Interactive Elements: Incorporate participatory and multisensory elements to engage viewers on multiple levels.

Potential deepening of my research

Ø Social Context Audience Engagement: Study how different audiences interpret and engage with my work. This involves collecting feedback and analysing audience responses to understand the social impact of my art.

Key Themes and Theoretical Frameworks:

1.     Deleuze's Concept of Difference:

o   Explore how my art embodies difference and challenges fixed identities, encouraging viewers to embrace multiplicity and fluidity.

o   Reflect on how my use of unconventional materials creates new meanings and associations, disrupting traditional norms.

2.     Massuni’s Theory of Affect:

o   Analyse how I can use the affect as a pre-conscious stimulation of emotions in order to challenge perception and encourage transformative actions.

3.     Synaesthesia and Multisensory Engagement:

o   Investigate how my synaesthetic approach enhances viewers’ sensory experiences and deepens their emotional responses.

o   Examine how engaging multiple senses can bypass rational thought and provoke visceral reactions.

o   From the previous plans: Prepare the first draft of my synesthetic experiences and its connection with my work for a research book on synesthesia by Anton V. Sidoroff-Dorso (https://www.journeythroughthesenses.org/anton-v-sideroff-dorso/ ). This experience will help me explore my synesthetic perceptions further and find a connection with my art practice. 4.     Theories of Perception:

o   Study theories related to how viewers perceive art, such as semiotics, phenomenology, and synaesthesia. This helps in understanding how my multisensory approach impacts viewers.

o   Will Beauty or the Ugly Truth improve a person? The question of Catharsis.

5.     Trauma and Memory:

o   Analyse how personal and collective trauma is represented in my works, and how these themes intersect with cultural identity.

o   Discuss the therapeutic and reconstructive potential of art in dealing with past memories and experiences.

6.     Cultural and Political Contexts

o   Assess the impact of political environments, such as the Russian war context, on artistic expression and viewer reception.

o   Explore the role of art in challenging propaganda and promoting critical reflection on societal issues.

Potential deepening of my research

Ø Cultural Context Local and Global Cultures: Examine the cultural environments in which your work exists. This includes the specific cultural dynamics of my region and how they contrast with or relate to global trends. How my cultural background influences my artistic voice and how I address cultural identity and its complexities in my work?

Artworks for Analysis:

1.     For My Mom

2.     Untitled (Fairy Tale)

3.     At Home

4.     Colour of War

5.     Temporary Life

6.     new works…

Impact Assessment:

1.     Viewer Engagement: Measure changes in attitudes, perceptions, and behaviours among viewers through surveys, interviews, and observation.

2.     Behavioural Changes: Analyse the extent to which my art inspires viewers to take action or rethink their positions on social issues.

Collaboration:

1.     Joint Projects: Work with other artists or fine dining chefs to integrate diverse perspectives and enhance the collaborative potential of my practice.

2.     Interactive Workshops: Facilitate workshops that encourage participants to engage with my methods and materials, fostering a deeper understanding of my themes and approaches. Add analysis of one past workshop and think about how this practice need to be adapted and what can be done new?
