Assignment 2 Drawing

Updated: Jan 9, 2020

In the final assignment piece I tried to focus on:

- The use of colour in drawing

- The choose of the most appropriate medium for my subject

- Composition and context

- Mark-making and contrasts of line and tone

- Accurate and expressive depiction of form

- Experimentation with idea, material and method.

I conceived this idea since the session of sketches around the house. It took me a full 7 days working on this piece.

Materials which I used presented in the accompanying photo. I decided to implement experimental part of this course and build on this a whole work.

A solution for the cover of books came not immediately. As my tests represent, books were always the same but in reality, they were not. All of them have a name on the cover and subject. They also have a feeling which they give us after reading. So I decided to transfer this “aftertaste” of the book into the visual reflection. For instance, a book of Sigmund Freud is with pieces of mirror, History of the East with an intricate pattern of the sewing, as History of Art but already arranged lines of a thread, classics of Russian literature with melancholy and tragedy, Russian Artists presented by elements of mixed colour and so on.

The main object of this work is a piece of the Berlin Wall. When you see it a first time you likely would not recognize this object, but I left a bear in front of it which consciously could lead you in a right direction. All books as a frame for the piece of a concrete with metal wire, but at the same time it is an antithesis between knowledge and ignorance. Colourful, arranged books and grey, hidden in the depth of the bookshelf a stone. Like a souvenir stands there together with Rio de Janeiro Jesus Christ, Berlin’s bear and a Ddinggu dog form the Korean artist Seung Koo Lee but a value of these objects is different.

The most difficult part of this work was to collect each image of a book together and correlate the whole subject around the piece of the Berlin Wall. Technically the piece of Wall was the trickiest one as the surface of it the only detail which distinguish it. I used the frottage technique with 4 layers of dry and oily materials for depicting a volume of concrete.

To get a full impression out of this work I suggest using an ultraviolet flashlight which allows you to discover each cover of the book.
