Exhibition visit – You Si, Mycrocosmos Shanghai October 2018

Mycrocosmo explores the artist’s personal conception of an ever-changing, never-stagnant reality of interconnected organisms, objects, and technology. (Peter Hagan, curator IlNNOO Galery Shanghai)

Gentle colours and soft lines misled me, I thought that the artist was a woman. You Si (1954) was born in Beijing. He lived and worked in New York City for 18 years.

The subtle organization of the artist's soul allows him to embody a wonderful, mystical world. Each work has its own dynamism and mystery. The eye glides over the surface and tries to find familiar silhouettes of flowers, animals, fish ... Interestingly, having a great international experience in working and learning, You Si still returned to the roots of his artistic education and Chinese tradition - rice paper and ink. The technique of the artist is very time consuming and painstaking. Work on one picture can take up to a year.

The exhibition curator (Peter Hagan) pointed out the artist’s tendency to reproduce the relationship between microorganisms and technology. I can distinguish the riot of the animal world and organisms in the works of the artist, but technology?

Oxford dictionary defines technology as the application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes, especially in industry. (Oxford dictionary, online) The current works don’t present “technology” as there is no “scientific knowledge” in an imaginary world.
