Identifying needs, experience and upskilling. Skills and Networks

Throughout my artistic journey, I have developed a clear vision of what I want to achieve, but I’ve also identified areas where my skills and experience need to grow. These gaps have become more apparent as my ambitions have expanded into photography, public sculptures, multi-sensory dining projects, and community lectures. Here is a summary of the gaps I’ve identified and what I need to focus on:

1.     Photography, Drawing, Painting Series: I want to go deeper with my series of photography, drawings and oil paintings. While I’ve made progress, I realize I still need to refine my technical skills, particularly in composition, lighting, and post-processing. To make my photography drawings and oil paintings stronger and more impactful, I need to experiment more and get a better understanding of how to create depth and narrative through the images, strokes and marks.

2.     Public Sculptures: I have a desire to create large public sculptures and bring my works outside, but I feel that my experience in this area is limited. I need to improve my knowledge of materials suitable for outdoor conditions, including their durability and how they interact with the environment. This also involves learning more about public art installations, logistics, and how to engage with public spaces effectively.

3.     Strengthening Artworks for Viewers: I want to make my works more impactful for viewers, especially in terms of scale and presence. To do this, I need to explore techniques for making the structures more robust without losing the delicate and conceptual elements that are central to my practice. I also need to develop a better understanding of viewer engagement—how they interact with art in public spaces and how to create artworks that leave a lasting impression.

4.     Large Public Projects (like Temporary Permanence): I aspire to realize more large-scale public projects similar to Temporary Permanence. However, I know there are gaps in my experience when it comes to funding, and working with local governments or public bodies. I need to improve my ability to plan, organize, and manage complex projects, including securing financial backing and logistical support.

5.     Multi-sensory Dining: I’m very excited about the idea of collaborating with a chef on a multi-sensory dining project that explores the intersection of art and food. However, I have no experience in this area. I need to educate myself on how to design immersive dining experiences and how food can be integrated with visual and sensory elements. Understanding culinary techniques and the logistics of working with chefs will be essential.

6.     Community Lectures: I want to launch art theory lectures for the local community, but I feel uncertain about how to structure and deliver these lectures in an accessible and engaging way. To improve in this area, I need to develop public speaking skills, presentation design, and the ability to adapt complex theoretical concepts to different audiences. Learning how to engage communities and make theory relatable will be key.

Action Plan to Address Gaps

  • Photography, Drawing, Painting Series: Take advanced photography, drawing, and painting workshops or courses online that focus on both technical aspects (lighting, editing) and conceptual development (creating visual narratives). Regularly practice and seek feedback on my series.

  • Public Sculptures: Research materials and methods for outdoor sculpture creation, possibly through attending online workshops, consulting with experts, or visiting installations. Explore techniques to make the sculptures more durable and engaging.

  • Impactful Artworks: Study how artists successfully create large-scale artworks that captivate the viewer and experiment with my own materials and concepts. Consider exploring new materials or fabrication techniques.

  • Project Management: Learn about managing large-scale projects, including working with funding bodies, city governments, and logistics. Seek out mentors who have experience in public art projects or enroll online in courses related to project management for artists.

  • Multi-sensory Dining: Begin by collaborating with chefs, attending culinary events, and learning about the integration of food and art. Research successful examples of multi-sensory dining experiences to understand how these concepts can be merged.

  • Community Lectures: Develop my public speaking and communication skills. Attend workshops on teaching and presenting art theory in community settings. Practice by giving smaller lectures or talks, and ask for feedback to continually improve.

By addressing these gaps, I believe I can move forward with my artistic practice and achieve the goals I’ve set out for myself, from creating impactful public works to launching innovative, multi-sensory experiences and engaging communities through lectures.
