The main idea of this public sculpture is to build awareness about world pollution and our attitude to waste. Therefore materials that will be used need to be collected together with pupils from sawmills and metal landfills.
The practical purpose of the sculpture is a meeting place for pupils, adding colour to everyday routine, a visual provocation to stimulate free thinking.
My thought process began with a flat surface on which children should sit or lie in the sun.
And this has already made me positive. I imagine how they rest during the break on a warm surface. I would like to use "local" and natural materials which are intended for recycling. By local materials, I mean - wood and metal. Therefore, for example, for a first flat surface, I want to use painted wood. Because the metal at high temperatures will be very hot, it will be impossible to sit on it.
Next, I started looking at the architectural elements of the building. Round and semi-oval windows led me to think about this shape. The first thing that came to mind was round shapes from scotch tape, which immediately turned into a swing. I attached them to another rounded surface. I liked this idea at first. But after much thought, and creating a model of a person in the right proportions, I realized that children can hurt each other with such a design. Therefore, this idea has to be abandoned - safety first of all.
Also, such increased interactivity of my sculpture made me think, is it still a work of art or already a technical structure for a playground? Here I remember Carsten Höller 2006 Test Site at the Tate Gallery of Modern Art. The task of this art object is the experience of almost free fall. Thus, it is a redefinition of an entertaining experience in the arts. In my case, the experience of spending time together outside of the school or use of waste can be presented as an art object. But I do not need to dilute it with swings/carousels, since this topic will be transferred already by the place itself and materials in use.
Everything that followed happened somehow quickly and smoothly.
There remains a round form entering into a dialogue with the semicircular arches of the school. I needed to add more textures. I wanted to use dissimilar materials so that it would be interesting for the eye to explore them. I needed a roof to keep the sun and rain out. This is how paper appeared, which in reality will be replaced by multiple parts of metal sheets. In doing so, I added dynamics to the entire structure with a straight, long line. The final material may be wood.
And the whole story was completed by the sun, and again I manipulated a cloud. I like this controversial concept - hiding from the rain under the cloud. In this cloud, will be installed bulbs with a warm subdued light so that the sun's rays shine from this cloud in the evening. The purpose of this is that the guys do not hide in the dark corners of the school but spend time comfortably here. I would like to make the sun from a metal rope partially painted in colour.
I had to raise one side of the roof because I thought that children could climb on top and it would not be safe. The colour scheme is shown approximately as I understand that the final colour will depend on the selected materials and paints.
During this project, I realized that I do not like to think with a pencil in my hands, rather I think with materials in space and not on a plane.
