Project 3 Freedom

Updated: Jun 5, 2020

I thought that for this work, the name "Freedom" is suitable.

Canvas size 80 x 60 cm. Eagle height 85 cm. Other dimensions are variable between 40 cm. and 60 cm.

How I came to this experiment? Probably according to my favourite method of speculative fabrication.

Working on the big painting, I left two extra eagles. One on canvas (I tried a new technique for transmitting a printed image) and one cut out. I thought that how interesting it turns out is actually the same eagle, but in a different environment. One is in space of the room and the other in canvas space.

I started to develop this idea further… I needed to fix the Eagle on something in order to get the flight effect. So, just a metal stick was enough. Next was a search of the form on the other side of the wooden construction.

I needed to balance the weight on the freestanding form. In the beginning, I was searching for the abstract form. It would be a good start of the thinking process for the viewer with a question “ – What kind of form is it? And what it is about?”

But playing with the cubes I all the time came back to the idea of the city. And finally, I saw my own view from the window in Moscow.

Now when my relatives and friends locked at home for some of them, a window is the only way to be outside… to be free. Rhetorically it turned to be a nice game of meanings – Eagle, the bird in the sky, represents freedom and window view from the closed apartment, limited view.

Sculptural composition and painting connected together via simple square forms of the buildings. I added additional lines on the canvas like it would be a plan of the city for building. (This is match nicely with the idea of fast-developing Dubai. See below). These bring together line from the metal rod with Eagle and shadows from the wooden blocks which dropped on the canvas.

I use a white wooden board for sculptural elements for identification of this space – one is horizontal, another vertical and one more space-window from the projector.

I was searching for video with the flight of Eagle to bring the action into the work. And I found an interesting video from 2015 made in Dubai. Eagle was flying with a camera on its body. It shows the city from the bird's-eye. Man could not do this, but I'm also not quite sure why you need to torment the bird because you can really well imagine how this view looks especially after visiting the Burj Khalifa top viewpoint.

In original drawing and sculpture there no physical movement. Video can represent the movement. But these three medium belongs to the plane. Painting belongs to the plane of canvas; sculpture belongs to the horizontal supportive plane and video projection to the vertical plane. It can be assumed that each of the mediums has its own place in space, but with current technical capabilities, this place can change. If we make a projection onto the ceiling, put the painting on the floor, and stick the sculpture to the wall, then the place also is not fixed.

And another place that is worth mentioning is the consciousness of the viewer. As a result, all these images are collected in one picture and fall into the consciousness of a person, where the selection of context begins. In the end, it does not matter what it is? A sculpture, a drawing, a video on the screen this mediums are information and emotion for a person that will be transformed into one general feeling. I think that at the end the meeting point for all mediums is the consciousness of the viewer.

In this work, I create a parallel of the window view from my apartment and video window view. The knotty moment is that windows are different, one is physical static and we see it every day and another is dynamic, epic and can be all the time new.
