Project 4 Painting from the dream

What is a sculpture?

a work of art that is a solid figure or object made by carving or shaping wood, stone, clay, metal, etc. Oxford Dictionaries online https://www.oxfordlearnersdictionaries.com/definition/english/sculpture?q=sculpture (Accessed 30.05.2020)

So, I saw such a sculpture in my imagination. Perhaps it was a reaction according to Freud. The confluence of many memories and emotions in my mind, but it was a voluminous composition with attic figures.

Here I will assume that there is no exact definition of where this three-dimensional figure should be located - in the real world or some other. Thus, I am in another reality, the world of sleep, but it is also three-dimensional - I perceive things in volume.

The next morning I made a sketch. I saw the colour of these figures and the material. It was a soft, delicate material similar to something between plastic and clay. I felt this material in the dream, so in my work on canvas, I decided to convey this with the colour and texture of paints.

After a recent trip to Vienna This January, I was greatly impressed by the works of Klimt which were destroyed by fire in May 1945 at Immendorf Castle, Lower Austria.

Gustav Klimt (1899-1907) Philosophy [Oil on canvas (reproduction)] Wien: Leopold Museum

Gustav Klimt (1899-1907) Jurisprudence [Oil on canvas (reproduction)] Wien: Leopold Museum

Gustav Klimt (1899-1907) Medicine [Oil on canvas (reproduction)] Wien: Leopold Museum

To convey a complex texture and to represent life and movement, I used wallpaper with a pattern of flowers. This technique was new for me for therefore in struggled with the process of integration of this material on canvas. A large local stain of colour balances the work. In my dream, these silhouettes were rougher and simpler, but in the process of work, they acquired character and images.
