Project 5 Clay modelling. Work 1

The freshly opened pack of clay pleased me, but when I imagined 35 cm in three sizes, it turned out to be a lot. Do you know why? I had no idea (that doesn't usually happen to me.) what to do with the clay. All my experience has come down to building a human head, sketching from models, and building a human body. I baked some of the works, but now I do not have such an opportunity. And I realized that it was stopping me. To do the work with so much clay and then what? This piece of art will lie in the farthest corner of the garden. So I started working with a little amount of clay.

The clay was flesh-coloured. The first work for me was like a new acquaintance with this material and I decided to see where it would lead me. The first thing I thought was that the perfect cut of clay can only be achieved with unused clay.

And I remembered about my notes (sculptural doodles) and I started to just position pieces of clay on top of each other. The whole structure has become a boring mass. And the whole process was like building up children's house out of wooden blocks. I really wanted to break the monotony and establish a centre. So I remembered about the painted stone in a light turquoise colour. I thought these colours would match perfectly. In the end, the colour was my motivator. And it seems to me that this combination turned out to be very harmonious.

The state of the clay, while moist and malleable, is emphasized by the natural colours. In contrast, the stone is opposed. Solid, cold stands against the main movement. It's like a potential for a sculptor ... he works with each of the specially prepared blocks of clay and only one element falls out of the row. This can be a finished result - like the future. Or it is a "highlight" that will change the course of work in the process of using all the elements of clay.
