Project 5 Clay modelling. Work 4 My sensations in modern technologies.

Stone, metal mesh, clay, metal rods, canvas, 96H x 65L x 65W cm.

This work was planned as the continuation of the series of the Implicit form, but when I positioned the metal grid on the support composition became poor. So I waited and later rethink these materials under the new perspective.

After two figurative works, my last desire was to make abstract work, aimed entirely at reading the context of materials and their form. The question of materiality and sensations interests me because in new technologies they are much less or not at all. There is no physical body, no tactile sensations, more precisely, the material is always the same - it is glass and plastic that transmits a signal and an image.

New technologies for me it is a plastic, glass, electricity, precision, technicality. I wanted to counter this with something completely different. Show complexity, but with a simpler example. Natural, illogical, inartificial, native.

I set myself the task of creating a feeling, an emotion of saturation of the texture of some materials but at the same time try to contradict it. As in Smartphone, for example, I can see my mother but I can’t hug her.

I wanted to convey this through a combination of different materials. A rough canvas was taken as a basis since this material is used to create canvases for artists.

Concluding the whole composition in canvas, I kind of continue to create work as it would be a picture, only it is now voluminous. The selected materials match each other in their original colour and pattern. So the canvas has a similar structure to the iron mesh. The movement of materials is also similar. The straight lines of the metal sticks correspond to the straight line of the end of the canvas and the edges of the stone.

The centre of the composition is a piece of natural earth - clay. This material gives life to art objects and at the same time, can strike new life to plants or trees. Clay is malleable and adaptable. It can penetrate a metal net or allow foreign material to pass through itself.

At the same time, a feeling of secrecy and aggression can arise from the composition, since the stone is hidden by canvas, and iron bars pierce the earth's flesh (clay) and create a visible barrier around the circumference. Here I see just this duality of modern technologies. A complex of different materials put together, they convey materiality, but it cannot be touched and felt in full. It is only a visual experience without a bodily one. Uncomfortable metal rods push me away. A piece of clay is, as it were, protected by a fence, it wants to break out, but cannot.
