Project 6 Modelling in plaster. Work 2

Updated: Sep 28, 2020

This work took a long time to mature. I was looking for a combination of materials where the tactile would resist cold, soulless technology. The idea with fur came from the work of the phone cover, and the glass cracked while working on the natural screen led me to the final solution.

Since I had to use plaster of Paris at least 70 centimetres, I thought it was just the size of a standard pillow. I thought about this object constantly. A pillow is always associated with a positive feeling of relaxation and recharge. We hug the pillow when we sleep, cry, want privacy, miss. In this regard, this object for me has become associated with the same feelings that I have for my mother. Therefore, I connected the image of a pillow with tactile sensations close to the arms of my mother.

But in this work, technically I needed to fix the glass and at the same time link the image to the phone. So I came up with a rectangular shape. On one side is a pillow on the other a glossy screen. It is covered on one side with black reflective paint, on the other with fur that you want to hug, snuggle against it.

But glass acts as a limitation of this feeling. Glass that is in a mobile phone. It conveys the image, it shows the image of the mother, but it is limiting, it hurts because you cannot touch what you see.

Technical aspects

The proportions of the black block correspond to the proportions of the iPhone.

Difficulties arose with the representation of this object. I assumed placing it in a slightly inclined way, but in this position, the reverse side of the work is not visible. Perhaps I need to use additional supports that would not hide the shape on both sides.

On the other hand, I can hide the black side, since I also noticed that if the black side is associated with the phone screen, then the soft side with its cover, and I planned the opposite.

Also, I'm not sure about the title of the work. I thought about the following options: Video call from mom; video screen; telephone screen; two screens.

There is a risk that the viewer will see the counteraction of the materials, but will not relate the work to the problem of modern technology and the telephone.
