Reflective Commentary. Strongest Works

As an artist, my practice is driven by a desire to challenge established norms and perceptions, disrupt complacency, and inspire transformative action. My work primarily engages with themes of trauma, memory, cultural identity, and the visceral sensory experiences that these evoke. Using unconventional materials, I create artworks that provoke immediate emotional responses and deeper critical reflections.

The process of creating my art is inherently tied to the materials I use and the methods I employ. Whether folding newspapers in a slow, repetitive manner or engaging in the physical act of breaking and reconstructing wooden elements, my bodily involvement is a crucial aspect of my work. This physical engagement not only shapes the final artwork but also embodies the struggle, effort, and intensity of the themes I explore.

for my mom, 2023, canvas, paint, recycled newspapers, screws, metal grid, cardboard, acrylic, fixatives, wood, video projection 3´30, 118 x 135 x 23 cm.

My hypersensitive attitude to texture, colour, and composition extends beyond visual perception, engaging the tactile, olfactory, and auditory senses of the viewer. The meticulous processing of materials—painting, peeling, scraping, scratching, and applying substances like sand, plaster, and cement—encourages viewers to touch and interact with my works. For instance, sculptures made from newspapers emit distinct smells that evolve over time, from fresh and hopeful when wet to carrying the scent of their past uses when dry. These sensory elements create a multi-layered experience that bypasses rational thought and engages viewers on a more intuitive, emotional level.

In my collaborations, such as with a German artist who works with abstract paintings, I seek to value the contributions of diverse participants and create works where multiple voices and perspectives can interact. By exchanging and finalizing each other's works, we embrace the unique differences of each participant, fostering a dialogue that transcends individual artistic visions and goals.

The theoretical framework of my practice is heavily influenced by Deleuze's concept of difference, which I apply to challenge fixed identities and encourage a fluid understanding of self and others. By using unconventional materials that carry their own narratives and histories, I aim to create metaphors and symbolic images that deepen the viewer's engagement and prompt them to question societal norms and personal constructs.

Through my art, I address the complacency of those who remain silent or are manipulated by propaganda. I believe that every person has a responsibility to take action and that art can be a powerful catalyst for change. By disrupting the environment of passive acceptance, I hope to provoke critical thinking and inspire viewers to challenge the status quo and speak out against injustices.

Ultimately, my work is about creating a space for emotional and sensory exploration, where viewers can engage deeply with the themes of trauma, memory, and identity. By transforming the viewer's role from passive observer to active participant, I aim to foster a more profound and personal connection with the artwork, encouraging a transformative experience that extends beyond the gallery space and into the viewer's everyday life.
