Assignment 3 - Representation of perspective and energy

Updated: Jan 9, 2020

As a subject for Assignment 3, I needed to demonstrate an understanding of aerial or linear perspective. A drawing should include straight-lined objects and items from nature. I also as always, need to be creative, brave and experiment with a composition… tries to recreate the energy of the place and feelings. This how I saw this task for myself.

As the final work, I immediately had an idea of what to paint. In 2013 the first time I saw in such a quantity wind energy mills. I was impressed by the power, size, and idea of these machines. In 2015 I created first work about this subject. But at that time I experienced only academic art and I would not be allowed in Russian University create something similar to what I did now.

Thereby I went for inspiration in a wind energy mills field. Unfortunately, I was not lucky with the weather and now I’m thinking would I create different work if the weather is good?! For sure, I’m going to come back to this place for more inspiration.

Meanwhile…

This was a weather condition:

This was the reason why I went there:

The power of these propellers just fascinated me. How they take a mass of clouds, trees, and rain and mix it together. We (people) created this for our convenient life but with an advance thought about nature. On my 3 km way to the mills, I realise that with my art I spend the light and energy which this “devises” produce. As in my works light is an essential element of experience. In order to see all the possibilities of the flat surface important to see the work with daylight and at night. Why would we stick only to “the museum's lamps” atmosphere? Different sours of light can support the work drastically.

Dan Flavin, for instance, used light itself to emphasise the space, colour and etc. But as I see, the whole Universe is a bit more complex, all parts are connected. Light connected with, energy, energy connected with object or form, form connected with colour and time… So, we can see the light source as a tool for example, for drawing or painting in the aggregate of all elements.

Any way…

In order to give something back, I mean this energy which I spend on art, I tried to transfer this energy by my charcoal strokes. They are bold and fast – this dynamism and vigour help to emphasize the atmosphere of this place.

To continue my preparation work after I survived a bolt of open field lightning, I started to touch and feel the materials.

Here I should explain my words – touch and feel… A not long time ago I realized that I need to see the materials (paper, pencils, oil colour, etc.) and imagine how they will change together with different materials. How should paper or canvas positioned - on the wall on the floor, scrolled, ripped… all possible variants I play in my imagination and this process sometimes even better than drafts on the flat paper. Why? Because of its flatness! and paper! it is the biggest limitation you could imagine.

But! As I conceived this drawing with particular rules, material stayed A1, A2, A3 sizes of paper, pencils, charcoal, fluorescent acrylic colour, and UV (black) lamp.

By coincidence, after the move, I had too many spare papers and while choosing the right size I saw this:

Did I already mention that I don't like standards and rules? (But I respect principal rules and follow it!)

This would be the same paper but I position it one of its natural ways… rolled.

This shape, of course, referred in my mind to the shape of the mill pillar. I also was thinking that with a mirror I even could double the space and make the whole work double size. But I didn’t have enough mirrors, so next time.

From the previous exercise with a limited palette study, I implemented the idea of the double background – original paper colour and diluted fluorescent acrylic this in the future will give me additional depth.

Testing with drawings on the iPad I found the solution and idea:

Some more tests:

and I was ready to start the original work.

The position of the paper cylinders is a first step for the perspective creation, drawing rules – the second and the light is and the essential moment on which the viewer normally pronouncing “-Wow!”. I tested it on my friends and visitors to my studio.

The viewer never expects to see something else out of what they see in front of them. This “wow!” effect is more and more interested me. Switching on and off the light in the room involves people in a kind of theatrical process, action…

Technical part – pencil B5 in a comparison with charcoal on the acrylic surface gave additional visual distance in the work. Unfortunately charcoal is a very unstable material and even after an additional fixing agent it is easy to lose its tone. Conceiving this work with energetic, fast and expressive lines I thought will add the dynamism and emotions about weather and the power of mills.

p.s. the problem is – you really need to see it in real. Photo and video with their lenses are not as sensitive as our eyes.

Please enjoy watching this work with accompany of the rain sound
