Negative space as important as space which belongs to the objects.
Negative space, in art, is the space around and between the subject(s) of an image. Negative space may be most evident when the space around a subject, not the subject itself, forms an interesting or artistically relevant shape, and such space occasionally is used to artistic effect as the "real" subject of an image.[i]
Usually we notice the object itself because it is in motion, or with bright colours, or just darker than the ambient light.

As an example, Patrick Caulfield uses negative space almost like the main subject for the field of work. Completely flat background gives to the artist a chance to play with the form, first demolish and then build a new world without unnecessary colour and tonal stains.
