Research Point: Principles of Learning and Research

Updated: Dec 21, 2023

This is the first research that I consciously do in my practice. Before even starting physical research, i.e. in the preparatory period, I can say that so far it was only a learning process. I understood the need a work plan, a philosophical theory to use, studied methods for research and it was all just a theory. If we draw a parallel between the process of learning and research, we can see a closely intertwined process whose goal may be the same thing - the search for something new.

I am invited to consider the ultra-democratic and progressive model of education presented by Felicity Allen (2011).

This model specifies the following principles:

· Learning is an active process in which the learner uses sensory input and constructs meaning out of it.

· [A sufficient learning process needs] to provide activities which engage the mind as well as the hands

· ...progressive education recognizes the social aspect of learning and uses conversation, interaction with others and the application of knowledge as an integral aspect of learning.

· Learning is contextual … We cannot divorce our learning from our lives.

· One needs knowledge to learn

· It takes time to learn

· Motivation is a key component in learning.

On the one hand, these two processes Learning and Researching are closely related to each other, and one can transform into the other, but we need to understand the other side as well.

But not every learning process, not in every educational institution and not in every country, is something uniform. Often, the learning process is simple repetition, and memorization, without developing the student’s ability to reflect or make independent conclusions. In my opinion, this method of teaching is not only ineffective but also dangerous for the whole world. Because this is how nationalist and fascist principles are taught to children and teenagers.

In such cases, we simply cannot talk about combining these two concepts. When, for example, a person has studied the meaning of hieroglyphs, the meaning of a political party, and unwavering compliance with the system, what kind of independent, freely motivated, and in a modern context research will result?

Research implies and requires from the researcher freedom of thought, the most unbiased view and critical thinking. Whereas the learning process can be imposed.

At the same time, it is worth noting that these two processes complement each other and are closely intertwined.
