Exploring the world through the viewfinder, through the phone’s camera, through square photos on social networks…
In this amount of visual culture, we perceive reality differently than our parents. In other words, when we find ourselves in a new place that excites us, which makes us experience beauty or sublime, inside of us there is an interweaving of smells, sensations, memories and a desire to capture this moment appears. Taking a photo was the easiest way to visually describe the place. At the moment when I am at that place, our consciousness runs further, and now we are holding a telephone and taking pictures, posting photos on social networks. Thus, what I and my friends will see numerous times will be this photo. I spend the rest of my days with this photo and maybe I will never return to the original place of my delight.
We snap from the natural environment a small "square" of our memory and place it in the virtual space of a “data cloud” or the Internet. Such a cut-out/limitation form our past. We think to the end of the frame, to the border of a flat image. It is difficult to remember what was behind the house on this image because probably we didn’t even see it. Because we were busy taking pictures, but not this moment.
By a similar example, our future can be shaped for us by the same images. Absorbing all the same information, in the form of a huge number of images from media sources, we don’t notice how our inner voice tells us whether I like this product or not and how I want to be seen next time.
To create a relief, I decided to use a Smartphone as a material, with images of iconic beauty that are promoted on social networks. Such an implementation contrasts the very idea of ideal beauty and the method of its demonstration.
Some elements of the images are taken from the corresponding "kitsch" sources. Each of these photos is impeccable. Perfect eyes, lips, hair, nose. Since the overall photograph is fragmented, it turns out that there is no harmony. Headphones collect the image and visually tell us that the woman from the pictures is not interested that she is been looked at, although she knows about it, she is focused on herself.
Unformed ideal, 2020, Smartphones, headphones, dimensions are variable
