To compare the two works, we need some facts about the artists.

Mitel was born in 1814 in Normadie (France). In 1841 he moved to Paris. 1875, he died in Barbizon France.

Van Gogh was born in 1853 in the Netherlands. In 1886, until 1888, Van Gogh lived and worked in Paris. Since 1889 he was treated at Saint-Rémy. Since he did not have the opportunity to diversify himself with picturesque subjects, Van Gogh created copies of works by other artists.

Еhere were 21 copies of Miletus's works. (Pickvance (1986), 155). Van Gogh wrote to his brother that such copying is similar to the interpretation of Beethoven's works by other musicians. According to Van Gogh, copying Miletus' works translates them into another language.

Here we can draw some analogies and differences in the presented works.

The colour scheme has changed compared to the work of 1850. Colour and paint on canvas take on a different meaning. This is an independent object of study in this era.

Ultimately, I can agree with the opinion of Van Gogh that a direct copy of the work of another artist allows you to rethink both the plot and the technique. In such work, there will be no repetition since the work will be endowed with the characteristic of a new time and the spirit of the artist.

Even if a copy of the original work is devoid of external differences, anyway, its creation will be completed in a different time period, in a different atmosphere and in a different context, which will give it a unique meaning.
