Work 1 Interpersonal relations in modern society

Updated: Sep 2, 2020

The idea of this sculpture remained from the previous part 2 Developing construction.

Now, a month later, when I write about this work, I no longer like it. I realized that the solution that seemed to me creative before is very popular among novice sculptors. Also, the question arose if the presented image is related or reflects the theme indicated in the title.

The colour of gold reflects power and money. It is a precious metal. And stone and cement are materials from which high-rise business centres are built. Material is cheap and common.

The finished work resembles a male phallus. Although I did not plan this, it is successfully complemented the topic. It points to the dominance of the male part of the population in the spheres of power, money, gold, and construction too. This moment reflects aspects such as rivalry and strength.

In modern society, a person claims to be equal, but, in my opinion, the human essence is still sliding towards domination. In the presented sculptural composition, this feature is expressed by placing one element on top of another. Thus, is created an unambiguous perception of the “bottom” and “top”, the hierarchy.

Equality remains as a straight line of subordination and no more.

In the work, plastic was used as a material of "our time", harmful to nature and so irreplaceable for humans, especially in the process of frantic consumption. The substance remaining in the form of plastic bag is limited. We see that cement, being harder and stronger than a plastic bag, still obeyed and eventually froze in the proposed form. Which, in my opinion, is very symbolic. A person thinks that he is free in choice and beliefs, but we do not notice the transparent, artificial film created by society, which limits us and sets the form of behaviour.

Answering the question posed, I think that you can see the connection with the declared topic after analyzing the materials and the approach used in the work.
